The Land:
The Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most esteemed subzones, is home to the Poderi Aldo Conternoestate. Its vineyards are perched at 350 to 400 meters above sea level, with south and southwest-facing slopes that catch the sun's warmth, while cool nighttime temperatures help the Nebbiolo grapes retain acidity. The soil, a rich blend of clayey marls, limestone, and sand, contributes both power and finesse to the wine. The natural low yields of these old vines enhance concentration, producing a Barolo with remarkable depth and complexity.
The Wine:
The Barolo Bussia is a true expression of Nebbiolo from one of the region’s greatest sites. Hand-harvested in mid-October, the grapes undergo a long maceration in stainless steel, with fermentation temperatures carefully controlled to extract depth of flavor without overpowering the wine’s elegance. After fermentation, the wine is aged in large Slavonian oak casks, which allow it to develop structure and complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit. The wine showcases classic notes of dried cherry, rose petals, and earthy truffle, underpinned by firm tannins and vibrant acidity. Layers of tobacco, leather, and spice unfold on the palate, leading to a long, persistent finish that hints at the wine’s potential for decades of aging.
The People:
The Conterno family, led by Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo, continues to honor the legacy of their father, Aldo Conterno, one of the legends of Barolo. Their approach to winemaking is deeply committed to tradition, but with a keen understanding of the modern palate. They believe in minimal intervention, allowing the character of the vineyard to shine through in every bottle. The family’s dedication to low yields and meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and the cellar ensures that the Barolo Bussia is a faithful reflection of the terroir and the Conterno philosophy—elegance, longevity, and a deep sense of place.
