The name means "green wine," a nod to youth rather than color, and everything about the place points toward freshness. High rainfall and moderate summers keep sugars low and acidity high, while the granite soils lend a faint saline edge. Vines here are traditionally trained high off the ground to escape damp and rot, a local habit you still see across the region. The result is a style built for early drinking: light, bright, and low in alcohol.

The Wine

A white blend of Loureiro, Arinto, and Trajadura, fermented in stainless steel. Loureiro brings floral lift and citrus, Arinto the spine of acidity, and Trajadura a touch of roundness. It shows a pale lemon color, green apple and white flowers, and a soft mineral edge over medium body. At 10% alcohol with 6 grams of residual sugar against matching acidity, it reads essentially dry, clean, and crisp, with the gentle spritz typical of the region. This is everyday Vinho Verde done right: uncomplicated, precise, and built for refreshment.

The People

Quinta das Arcas is a family estate founded by António Esteves Monteiro, who set up the winery in 1985 to bottle wine from vineyards his family had spent the previous decade consolidating and replanting. Today the estate farms roughly 200 hectares across the Vinho Verde region and bottled its first certified organic wine in 2012, part of a long-stated focus on lower-impact farming. Winemaking across the Arca Nova range is handled by Fernando Machado and Henrique Lopes. The estate has since expanded south to the Alentejo, but its foundation remains here in the Minho, where Arca Nova was the label that first carried the family name to market.

Food Pairing

A summer white that wants simple food. Pour it with grilled sardines or other oily fish, a plate of sheep's cheese and cured meats, shrimp and garlic tapas, or a green salad with a citrus dressing. The producer suggests smoked turkey breast and sheep's cheese for a picnic. Its acidity and light spritz cut through salt and oil and reset the palate, which also makes it a natural aperitif. Serve it cold.
