At 600-700 feet elevation, it sits among the most westerly vineyard sites in Yamhill County, close enough to the Coast Range to catch cooling afternoon winds that slow ripening through the season. Soils here run to basalt beneath a loam topsoil, with rock outcrops where the ground was ripped before planting. The site has been farmed organically for years, though it is not certified. It is an unusual home for a Jura variety, but the marine-cooled, wind-swept exposure gives Trousseau something closer to its native climate than most of Oregon can offer.

The Wine

100% Trousseau, fermented with native yeast and aged in neutral oak, unfined and unfiltered, made with no additions and no sulfur added, a zero-zero approach even by natural wine standards. The 2023 growing season opened cool and slow, then turned warm and dry through a compressed harvest, giving the fruit full ripeness without losing the grape's naturally thin-skinned lightness. The result is impressively clean for a wine made with this little intervention: a pale, translucent red with the telltale Trousseau signature of red currant, cherry pit, and cracked black pepper, backed by an earthy, savory undertone and a fine, grippy tannin that belies the wine's weight. Serve it with a slight chill.

The People

Dan Rinke and Kim Hamblin founded Art+Science in 2011 on Roshambo ArtFarm, their 50-acre property in Sheridan, Oregon, where they also grow apples, quince, and pears for cider and perry. Rinke studied viticulture and enology at Fresno State, worked at Domaine Alfred and Rhys Vineyards in California, then moved to Oregon in 2007 to make wine at Johan Vineyards, where he built a reputation for hands-off, native-fermentation winemaking. Art+Science carries that same philosophy into every bottle: nothing added, nothing taken away, no commercial yeast, no processing aids. The farm itself is managed with the same restraint, using no-till, mixed-culture practices across its orchards. Sourcing Trousseau from Morning Mist reflects Rinke's ongoing interest in Jura varieties rarely planted in Oregon.

Food Pairing

Trousseau's pepper and red-fruit character make it a natural with charcuterie: country pate, saucisson, or a board of soft cheeses. It also holds up to roast chicken with mushrooms, grilled salmon with a black pepper crust, or a mushroom risotto finished with thyme. Serve it with a slight chill to sharpen the fruit and bring the pepper forward. It is the kind of red you open at the start of dinner and keep pouring straight through the cheese course.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0439/7436/1248/files/P7040600_c26483f1-6b48-4e7a-b094-24b7d26b2656.jpg?v=1783392085
