It grows across the Monferrato hills east of Alba, historically as a farmer's grape rather than a collector's one. Frasca's Freisa comes from a single hectare in the municipality of Moasca, in the hills around Nizza Monferrato, planted between 190 and 220 meters. The soil is Sant'Agata fossil marl carrying a high concentration of sand. That sand fraction matters here: it lifts aromatics and keeps Freisa's naturally assertive tannin from turning coarse, while the underlying marl holds water through the dry stretch of summer. The landscape is rolling rather than dramatic, amphitheaters of vines above small villages, with wide day-to-night temperature swings driving the perfume.

The Wine

100% Freisa, and bottled still, which is worth stating plainly. Freisa d'Asti DOC also permits frizzante and sweeter amabile versions, and most of the historic bottlings people remember were fizzy. This is the dry-styled, still expression. Delicate pressing with 30% whole bunches, 15 days on the skins, temperature-controlled fermentation with indigenous yeast and no punch-downs whatsoever, a deliberate refusal to extract hard from a grape that gives tannin freely. Four months in a 50-hectoliter oak cask five years old, then 12 months in bottle before release. Light filtration, 82 ppm total sulfites, roughly 6,000 bottles a year. Raspberry, sour cherry, dried rose and white pepper, with a bitter-almond snap at the close and grainy, insistent tannin on a light frame, the Nebbiolo family resemblance showing in texture more than fruit. 2024 in Piedmont brought heavy spring rain after years of drought, real fungal pressure and the need for strict selection, then a hot, stable summer that carried the fruit to full phenolic ripeness.

The People

The Frasca family returned to Piedmont specifically to make wine in Nizza Monferrato, and the project took shape when they met Matteo Gerbi. Born in Asti and trained in Langhe cellars, Gerbi runs vineyards and cellar across 22 hectares spanning Nizza Monferrato, Agliano Terme and Moasca. The estate is known first for Barbera and Nizza DOCG; Freisa, Grignolino, Arneis and Riesling round out a portfolio that leans toward the region's overlooked varieties rather than away from them. Farming is sustainable, not certified organic, and the estate makes no claim otherwise. La Guaragna is the home property outside Nizza Monferrato. The magpie on the label is a nod to the bird Piedmontese growers live alongside.

Food Pairing

Freisa is a table wine in the literal sense and wants salt and fat. A board of salumi misti with mostarda; tajarin tossed in butter and sage; grilled sausage over braised lentils with red wine vinegar; a mushroom risotto finished with Parmigiano. The tannin scrubs richness and the acidity resets the palate between bites. At this price it belongs in the weeknight rotation, not on the special shelf.
