oggero-roero-bianco-2024
Oggero Roero Arneis 2024

The Land

The Roero is Piedmont's left bank, across the Tanaro from the Langhe, built on ancient seabed sands rather than limestone and clay. Those sandy soils define every wine grown here: lighter in structure, lifted in aromatics, with a mineral thread that reads more marine than stony. Alberto's Arneis vines sit at 280 meters above sea level on sandy, east-southeast-facing ground in Santo Stefano Roero, 20 years old and planted on soils that drain quickly and warm up fast, allowing for clean, focused fruit without the heaviness that richer ground can impose on white wine.

The Wine

100% Arneis, certified organic. Hand-harvested in the first decade of September. Alberto labels this wine "Bianco" rather than "Arneis" deliberately: typical Arneis can be overtly floral, slightly sweet, or simply one-dimensional. This is something different. The harvest is split: 50% goes directly to whole-bunch press; the remaining 50% spends three days on the skins before pressing. Both halves age half in stainless steel and half in large, untoasted Slavonian oak barrels, with nothing added at any stage. Released 10-12 months after harvest. The result is savory and textured in a way that most Arneis is not: stone fruit, fennel seed, and a saline, persistent finish. The 2024 harvest came in before the September rains that complicated later-ripening varieties elsewhere in Piedmont, and the wine reflects that: clean, focused, and structured.

The People

Alberto Oggero grew up in Canale, in the Roero, and spent his childhood working alongside his grandfather Sandro in the family's vineyards. His parents did not follow their own fathers into wine; Alberto was different. When Sandro passed, Alberto returned to take over the 2-hectare property, and by the time he was 20 he had restored the family house and cellar by hand. His first wine was 2009: 500 bottles of Roero Arneis. The first Nebbiolo followed in 2011. In the years since he has reclaimed additional old vineyards in Santo Stefano Roero, building the estate to around 5 hectares with vines ranging from 25 to over 80 years of age. The farming is certified organic; fermentation is with indigenous yeasts; nothing is fined or filtered. His philosophy is restraint and patience: nothing happening in the cellar should get in the way of the fruit. He is a member of RAW Wine and works entirely with the Roero's two native varieties, Arneis and Nebbiolo.

Food Pairing

Grilled branzino with capers and olives, fritto misto di mare, spaghetti alle vongole, or fried vegetables with aioli. The savory texture and persistent finish make it equally useful with a plate of salumi and aged cheeses. This is an all-day white — the kind you open early and don't put down until the bottle is empty.
