But California hangs onto pockets of ancient, dry-farmed, head-trained Carignan, and in the right hands those old vines make something serious. This rose comes from roughly 80-year-old organically farmed Carignan in Mendocino County, on red clay soils in the cooler, coastal-influenced north of California wine country. The age of the vines gives concentration and balance, while Mendocino's cool nights keep the acidity bright, exactly what you want for a fresh, dry rose.

The Wine

100% old-vine Carignan, hand-picked at dawn and whole-cluster pressed straight to juice, an intentional rose made for pink wine rather than bled off from a red. That direct-press approach gives it a pale color and a crisp, clean profile: bright red berry and citrus, a mineral, saline snap, and a genuinely dry finish. It is light and refreshing but has the old-vine substance to feel like more than a patio pounder. This is what California Carignan can do when someone takes it seriously.

The People

Remy Saves the Sea is a charity wine made by young Remy Dorrance together with her father, winemaker Noah Dorrance of Reeve Wines, a small-production estate he and Kelly Dorrance founded in Healdsburg in 2015. Remy, a surfer who grew worried about the health of the oceans, asked her dad to help her make a wine so she could put the profits toward protecting them. The project is a 1% for the Planet member, and proceeds support ocean and planet health through The 5 Gyres Institute, which fights plastic pollution in the seas. It is a serious wine with a genuinely good reason to exist.

Food Pairing

This is an all-purpose warm-weather rose that leans toward the sea. Pour it with oysters, ceviche, fish tacos, or a shrimp and avocado salad. Its dry crispness and saline edge are made for raw and grilled seafood, while the light red-berry fruit keeps it easy alongside picnic food and summer vegetables. Serve it cold and drink it outside, ideally near the water.
