It sits on the upper slope of the combe behind the village at over 300 meters of elevation, significantly higher than most of the appellation's more famous premiers crus, with a pure south-facing aspect that is rare in the Côte de Beaune. That combination gives the wine Pommard's characteristic structure and depth while the altitude contributes lifted aromatics and a finesse that the clay-heavy lower plots cannot match. Xavier Monnot's vines here average around 50 years of age. This is the Pommard that surprises people who thought they already knew what Pommard tastes like.

The Wine

100% Pinot Noir. The 2022 vintage was warm and concentrated in Burgundy, one of the best recent vintages for red, and this high-elevation south-facing site handled the heat particularly well: it absorbed warmth without losing freshness. Dark cherry, dried rose petal, iron mineral depth, and a structured finish with the grip Pommard is known for, softened by the altitude. Xavier's approach focuses on purity of fruit over extraction; the wine is built to age but already speaks clearly.

The People

Xavier Monnot is the tenth generation of his family to make wine in Burgundy, tracing his mother's ancestors in Meursault back to 1723. Before he took over the family domaine in 1994, Xavier played rugby, and there is something of that directness and physicality in how he approaches winemaking: unadorned, purposeful, built to perform. In 2005 he began bottling under his own label from a 42-acre estate running from Beaune to Maranges, with particular strength in Meursault and Pommard. His Vignots is one of the clearest arguments for why elevation matters in this appellation.

Food Pairing

Slow-roasted duck with a red wine reduction, lamb chops with thyme, a mushroom-rich beef daube, or aged Comté with good bread. Pommard with altitude is one of the most food-useful reds in Burgundy: enough power for rich preparations, enough finesse to not overwhelm the table.
