The Land

The vines that produce this wine were planted in 1881, making them approximately 140 years old. They occupy a tiny 0.16-hectare parcel within Charmes-Chambertin, the largest Grand Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin, on limestone-clay soils that give this vineyard its characteristic silkiness and depth. At this age, vines produce minute yields of extraordinary concentration; the berries are small, the juice dense, and the flavors carry a complexity that younger vines simply cannot replicate. These are, to Steven's knowledge, the oldest vines in Burgundy, and the wine they produce is a direct argument for why vine age matters above almost any other variable.

The Wine

100% Pinot Noir, Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin. The 2018 vintage was warm and generous in Burgundy, one of the more concentrated recent years, and for a parcel of 140-year-old vines the heat translated into wine of unusual power and density: dark cherry, cassis, violets, incense, and a mineral finish that seems to go on indefinitely. Aged 20-24 months in French oak. This wine is built for the long run. It will be better in five years and better still in ten, and it will still be compelling at twenty.

The People

Domaine Joseph Roty is one of Gevrey-Chambertin's legendary estates, with an average vine age across the domaine of over 60 years and the most concentrated cluster of old vines in the Côte d'Or. Joseph Roty, who built the modern reputation of the domaine, passed away in 2008; the estate is now run by his sons Cyrille and Philippe, who maintain the same commitment to old-vine intensity and traditional winemaking. The Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes has been a Burgundy collectible for half a century, and the parcel has not changed.

Food Pairing

Aged Burgundian boeuf bourguignon, roast rack of lamb with black truffle, a plateau of hard aged cheeses, or simply decanted and poured without food. This is not a casual bottle. Open it with intention, give it an hour of air, and treat it accordingly.

Burgundy, in eastern France, encompasses several subregions, but it is the Côte d'Or that is home to many of the world's most expensive and revered wines. The region, primarily a single east-facing slope, has mixed limestone soils that vary dramatically from village to village and even vineyard to vineyard. White wines, crafted from Chardonnay, range from rich and opulent to lean and intensely mineral, while Pinot Noir produces silky, perfumed red wines of exceptional finesse and complexity. Centuries of winemaking tradition have resulted in every plot being meticulously recognized and scrutinized, making the Côte d'Or a true capital of terroir.

Burgundy - Cote d'Or

Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned, notoriously difficult-to-grow, low-yielding grape that finds its ancestral home in Burgundy, France, where it produces some of the world's most elegant and nuanced wines. While Burgundy remains its spiritual heartland, Pinot Noir has since traveled the globe, finding success in other cooler climates, notably in California, Oregon, New Zealand, and Germany. This grape is a challenge for any grower, as it requires specific conditions to show its best, and yet the wines it produces are capable of such a captivating and singular character.
