Margherita Otto Vino Chinato, produced by one of Barolo's rising estates under proprietor Alan Manley, represents a blend of tradition and innovation within the storied Italian wine region. This sweet fortified wine, crafted from Nebbiolo grapes, embodies the essence of Barolo's terroir while paying homage to classic winemaking methods.

  • Soil Type & Terroir: Leveraging diverse vineyard plots across Barolo, including the clay-rich Ginestra in Monforte d’Alba and the sandy Pernanno in Castiglione Falletto, the wine benefits from a varied terroir that contributes depth and complexity.

  • Grape Varieties: Made from Nebbiolo, including declassified lots from Barolo and Langhe Nebbiolo, this Chinato showcases the varietal's characteristic elegance and intensity, balanced with the added botanicals.

  • Winemaking: Embracing the traditional "assemblaggio" approach, Manley co-ferments grapes from different parcels in a single tank, followed by extensive maceration and aging in Slovenian oak, ensuring a harmonious integration of flavors.

  • Production: With an annual production of about 2,000 500ml bottles, this Chinato is a rare find, crafted outside the winery to comply with Italian law, and is distinguished by its refined balance of sweetness, bitterness, and aromatic complexity.

  • Tasting Notes: Margherita Otto's Chinato is noted for its sophisticated balance, less bitter and more nuanced than typical Chinatos, with a lower alcohol content that enhances its elegance.

Piedmont, framed by the Alps in northwestern Italy, is a land of rolling hills and carefully cultivated vineyards. The continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, creates prime conditions for the Nebbiolo grape, which dominates much of the region's red wine production. The Langhe area is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, structured red wines known for their complex aromas, firm tannins, and aging potential. While Nebbiolo is the dominant grape of Piedmont, the region also makes interesting white wines like those from Arneis and Timorasso. Alto Piemonte is a separate region in the north with its own distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo, alongside other red grape varietals.

Piedmont

Nebbiolo, a prestigious grape from Italy's Piedmont region, is celebrated for its profound truffle and rose aromas, complex flavors, and ability to age gracefully thanks to strong acidity and tannins, producing the renowned Barolo and Barbaresco wines.
