The Land:
Sourced from the eastern slopes of Mount Etna, this Etna Bianco Superiore comes from one of the most historic vineyard sites on the volcano. The high-altitude vineyards, rooted in deep volcanic ash and basalt soils, provide natural drainage and impart a distinct minerality to the wine. The proximity to the Ionian Sea brings cooling breezes that help maintain freshness and precision, while the long growing season allows for slow, even ripening—key to Carricante’s signature balance of acidity and complexity.
The Wine:
Made from 100% Carricante, the hallmark white grape of Etna, this wine is fermented with native yeasts and aged in large oak casks to enhance texture without overshadowing its purity. Bright citrus, green apple, and white flowers lead into a taut, saline-driven finish, with layers of flinty minerality and a touch of almond. Vibrant acidity gives it remarkable aging potential, evolving into deeper honeyed and smoky notes over time. A benchmark expression of Etna’s white wines.
The People:
The Nicolosi family’s connection to Etna’s vineyards dates back to 1727, making them the longest-standing winemaking family in the region. Their deep bond with the land has only strengthened over generations, shaping the history of Etna’s viticulture. In 1869, Paolo Nicolosi revolutionized local winemaking by separating white and red grape vinification—an unheard-of practice at the time—laying the foundation for what would become Etna Bianco Superiore. A century later, when Etna received its DOC status in 1968 (Sicily’s first), Carlo Nicolosi Asmundo helped write the official regulations. Today, Marco Nicolosi leads the estate with the same vision, balancing tradition with innovation to highlight the singular character of Etna’s terroir. Their mission is clear: to preserve the land’s natural heritage, share its unique story, and craft wines that embody the volcano’s power and grace.
