The Land

On the clay-limestone plateau of Montagne-Saint-Émilion, Château Franc-Baudron cultivates its vineyards with care, restraint, and an eye toward biodiversity. The soils here—rich in iron clay—anchor the vines and bring depth and texture to the fruit, while the surrounding ecosystem is nurtured with cover crops, beehives, and herbal treatments that support a natural balance. Though this is Bordeaux’s Right Bank—long the realm of Merlot—white varieties like Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc find an expressive voice in these soils, especially when grown organically and handled gently.

The Wine

Rétro Verso 2022 is a 50/50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, fermented and aged in stainless steel with five months on the lees. It’s a white Bordeaux that leans into freshness and texture: citrus oil, lemon peel, and a subtle smoky edge open into a rounded, creamy palate, lifted by a thread of salinity and minerality. There’s no oak to obscure the fruit or the site—just a quietly complex wine that balances brightness and breadth with ease. It’s clean, layered, and unforced—a modern classic rooted in old-school sensibility.

The People

The Guimberteau family has been farming Château Franc-Baudron since 1923, with each generation leaving its own quiet mark on the estate. Since 2010, the new generation has led the transition to certified organic farming and a minimal-intervention philosophy in the cellar. The goal is not just purity, but longevity—for the vines, the land, and the wines themselves.

The Bordeaux wine region, an emblem of vinicultural prestige, is bisected by the Gironde Estuary into the Left and Right Banks, each celebrated for distinct styles shaped by their unique terroirs. The Left Bank is renowned for its structured, Cabernet Sauvignon-led blends, while the Right Bank favors the softer, Merlot-dominated wines. This region is also the birthplace of the luscious, sweet wines of Sauternes. Bordeaux's time-honored blend and winemaking techniques have inspired countless wine regions around the globe, setting a benchmark for the wine world.

Due to limited publicly available information, complexity of research, or lack of transparency from certain wineries, it can sometimes be challenging to accurately categorize each vineyard's farming practices.
