The Land

The Verget Pouilly-Fuissé Les Combes Vieilles Vignes 2023 is sourced from the Les Combes vineyard in the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, within the commune of Solutré-Pouilly. This vineyard, planted with 70-year-old vines, has both southern (70%) and northern exposures, and is situated bordering the Premier Cru vineyards of Vers Cras and Aux Chailloux. The grapes for this wine are harvested in three separate passes to ensure optimal ripeness.

The Wine

This Pouilly-Fuissé is crafted using only the first press juice and fermented in 25% new barrels. The wine is then aged for 8 months with multiple rounds of batonnage, stirring of the lees. Expect a medium to full-bodied wine where the oak is prominent, lending spice to the nose, while the palate is distinctly mineral-driven. Flavors of yellow apple and quince suggest the warmth of the 2023 vintage, yet the wine avoids any sense of flabbiness, instead displaying an exotic ripeness balanced by classic structure and a persistent saline finish.

The People

Verget, founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens, operates on the principle that "the best wine is made using the best grapes." Unable to afford vineyards initially, Verget focused on meticulously sourcing grapes, always prioritizing fruit quality. Since 2006, Julien Desplans has overseen vineyard management and grape purchases, working alongside Jean-Marie in winemaking. Verget functions as a "laboratory of terroirs," seeking to highlight the nuances of each site. Pressing is a critical part of their process, with each plot pressed and vinified separately. Aging takes place in a variety of vessels including cement tanks, stainless steel vats, and barrels, often combining different aging methods for the final blend.

The Chalonnaise and Mâconnais, located in the southern part of Burgundy, are regions known for their approachable and characterful wines, both red and white. The Mâconnais is especially celebrated for its Chardonnay, producing white wines with a rounded texture and a core of bright fruit and minerality. The Chalonnaise, though also known for Chardonnay, sees great use of Pinot Noir and Aligoté, with a focus on freshness and vibrancy. While often overshadowed by the Côte d'Or, these regions offer a unique blend of tradition and value, showcasing a diversity of terroirs and styles, while still maintaining the overall character and grace that is Burgundy.

Burgundy - Chalonnaise & Maconnais

Chardonnay, one of the world's most versatile and beloved white grape varieties, showcases a remarkable spectrum of styles, from the lean, mineral-driven expressions of Chablis in France to the rich, buttery, and oak-aged versions from California's Napa Valley. Its adaptability extends to cooler climates such as Burgundy, where it achieves elegance and complexity, and to regions like Australia's Yarra Valley, known for producing vibrant and fruit-forward renditions. This grape's ability to reflect its terroir, coupled with winemaking techniques, results in a wide array of profiles, including unoaked, crisp varieties with apple and citrus notes, to full-bodied wines with tropical fruit flavors and creamy textures.
