The Land

Pommard is the Cote de Beaune's most muscular red, the appellation you reach for when neighboring Volnay and Beaune feel too delicate. This wine comes from Clos Marey-Monge, Burgundy's largest privately owned monopole, a nearly 20-hectare vineyard enclosed by ancient stone walls at the heart of Pommard. Its soils are unusual for the Cote d'Or: a rare mix of limestone, clay, sand, and gravel laid down over millennia by the Avant-Dheune river, which shifts across the site and gives the wine both power and lift. It is a single walled vineyard with the geological variety of an entire hillside.

The Wine

100% Pinot Noir from vines ranging 6 to 80 years old inside the Clos, hand-harvested and sorted on a vibrating table, fully destemmed, and moved into stainless steel by gravity. Fermentation runs on native yeast with minimal intervention, followed by 18 months of aging in French oak, only 10% new, and stainless steel, then bottled unfiltered. 2023 brought a warm September and a generous but well-balanced crop, picked between the 5th and 11th, that required careful temperature control to hold freshness. The result is a deep ruby with purple highlights, red fruit and rose petal on the nose, and a full, rounded palate with velvety tannins and a long, gently spiced finish.

The People

Chateau de Pommard was founded in 1726 and is now owned by the Carabello-Baum family, who began converting Clos Marey-Monge to biodynamics in 2017. The vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically under winemaker Emmanuel Sala and biodynamic specialist Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, with an emphasis on native-yeast, low-sulfur, gravity-fed winemaking that lets the monopole's terroir speak. The estate also runs Ecole V, a wine school, and treats Clos Marey-Monge as a living laboratory for understanding how a single walled site expresses its many soils.

Food Pairing

Pommard is built for red meat and game. Pour it with beef bourguignon, roast duck, a venison stew, or coq au vin. Its structure and velvety tannin stand up to braised and roasted meats, while the red-fruit core and spice keep it lively next to earthy, wintry dishes. A well-aged Epoisses or other washed-rind cheese is a classic Burgundian close. Give it time in the glass; it opens and deepens with air.

Burgundy, in eastern France, encompasses several subregions, but it is the Côte d'Or that is home to many of the world's most expensive and revered wines. The region, primarily a single east-facing slope, has mixed limestone soils that vary dramatically from village to village and even vineyard to vineyard. White wines, crafted from Chardonnay, range from rich and opulent to lean and intensely mineral, while Pinot Noir produces silky, perfumed red wines of exceptional finesse and complexity. Centuries of winemaking tradition have resulted in every plot being meticulously recognized and scrutinized, making the Côte d'Or a true capital of terroir.

Burgundy - Cote d'Or

Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned, notoriously difficult-to-grow, low-yielding grape that finds its ancestral home in Burgundy, France, where it produces some of the world's most elegant and nuanced wines. While Burgundy remains its spiritual heartland, Pinot Noir has since traveled the globe, finding success in other cooler climates, notably in California, Oregon, New Zealand, and Germany. This grape is a challenge for any grower, as it requires specific conditions to show its best, and yet the wines it produces are capable of such a captivating and singular character.
