The Land

On the northern edge of Meursault, just beyond the boundary of the appellation, lies a humble yet quietly revered parcel: La Monatine. Though it bears the Bourgogne Blanc designation, this site shares the same clay-limestone soils and slope orientation as its more famous neighbors. The vineyard sits on a gentle incline that benefits from both morning freshness and afternoon warmth, producing fruit with remarkable balance and nuance. The 2022 vintage was shaped by a warm, consistent season, yet Domaine Rougeot’s organic farming and early picking maintained lift and definition in the grapes. This is Chardonnay grown in Meursault soil—without the name, but with all the underlying structure and soul.

The Wine

La Monatine 2022 is a wine of quiet poise and layered clarity. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in neutral oak, it offers no distraction—only the clean, mineral-driven expression of its terroir. The nose is delicately perfumed with golden apple, lemon zest, peaches and a subtle touch of almond. On the palate, it is textured but linear, with a satin midweight feel that gives way to a persistent, limestone-laced finish. There is no overt richness here, just the elegance that comes from restrained ripeness, extended lees contact, and a lack of new oak. The shows like a natural wine, but isn’t funky or weird. It hums with Meursault-like depth while retaining the humble charm of its Bourgogne designation, with no makeup.

The People

Pierre-Henri Rougeot represents the eighth generation of his family to steward the vineyards of Meursault. In recent years, he has quietly transformed the domaine into one of the region’s most compelling voices, blending traditional sensibilities with a naturalist’s touch. Farming is fully organic, with a focus on soil vitality and vineyard balance. In the cellar, intervention is minimal—fermentations are native, sulfur is used sparingly, and élevage is patient and gentle. La Monatine reflects this philosophy beautifully. Though technically an “entry-level” wine, it is treated with the same care and seriousness as his premier cru bottlings. It is, above all, a wine of honesty and place, shaped by a deep respect for the land and a devotion to purity.
