  • Land: Mayacamas Vineyards, perched on the rugged slopes of Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley, benefits from a unique microclimate and terroir. The high-altitude vineyards are known for their stony soils, which stress the vines and contribute to the production of small, intensely flavored grapes. This environment is ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines of great depth and complexity.
  • Wine: The 2019 Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon from Mayacamas is a standout vintage, emphasizing elegance and refinement. Harvested between September and October, the wine underwent fermentation in a mix of concrete and stainless steel before aging in both large format foudres and neutral French oak barrels. This process enhances the wine's silky texture and aromatic profile, featuring notes of lilac, dried sage, and graphite, with a rich fruit core of mountain blueberry, maraschino cherry, and blackberry. The result is an exquisitely detailed and nuanced wine, with a structure that promises longevity and a balance that suggests a future of exquisite drinking.
  • People: The storied history of Mayacamas Vineyards dates back to 1889 when John Henry Fisher purchased the remote mountain property. He established Fisher & Sons, building the original winery with stones from the property and planting Zinfandel vines. After overcoming the setback of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the property changed hands in 1941 to Jack and Mary Taylor, who renamed it Mayacamas Vineyards and introduced the iconic wine label still used today. They expanded the winemaking facilities and planted the first Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, setting a new standard for quality at Mayacamas. In 1968, Bob and Eleanor Travers took over, with Bob bringing a commitment to traditional winemaking honed at Heitz Cellars. His methods were celebrated when his 1971 vintage participated in the 1976 Judgment of Paris, marking Mayacamas wines as a benchmark of California winemaking excellence. Bob's traditional approach and the continuous cultivation of the vineyards have shaped the winery’s legacy, maintaining its reputation as a producer of distinguished wines reflective of the Mt. Veeder terroir.
