The Land

Sourced from esteemed vineyards such as Castelli-Knight Ranch, Griffin's Lair, Armagh, Nellessen, Hawks Butte, and Alder Springs, this Syrah reflects the North Coast's varied microclimates and soils. The region's cool climate imparts a distinctive character to the wine, with the coastal fog and temperate conditions fostering a slow, even ripening of the Syrah grapes. This results in a wine that balances vibrant acidity with concentrated fruit flavors.

The Wine

100% Syrah, this wine underwent whole cluster fermentation and was aged for 10 months in neutral French oak puncheons, allowing the purity of the fruit to shine. On the nose, it offers aromas of ripe blueberries, crushed violets, and black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied and juicy, featuring flavors of black licorice, tar, and pomegranate liqueur. The wine exhibits a lovely balance of fruit, spice, and earth, with spicy tannins adding a delicious firmness that promises a long and graceful evolution.

The People

Pax Mahle, the visionary behind Pax Wines, is renowned for his dedication to producing Syrah that authentically expresses its terroir. His philosophy emphasizes sustainable practices and minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of each vineyard to be fully realized in the bottle.

This region includes wines labeled "North Coast", which are often blends including Sonoma and Napa counties. This expansive area encompasses established regions like Mendocino and Lake Counties, as well as newer vineyard sites pushing towards the Oregon border. Mendocino County is known for its varied climates, from the Anderson Valley's cool, fog-influenced areas ideal for Pinot Noir and sparkling wine, to warmer inland spots. Lake County, further inland, offers volcanic soils and a warmer climate suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon and other varieties. Beyond these, even more northerly locations are being explored for their unique terroir, contributing to the evolving identity of California's northern wine production.

California - North Coast & Far North

Syrah is a dark-skinned grape of French origin, specifically from the Northern Rhône Valley, where it produces some of the world's most powerful and complex wines. Known as Shiraz in Australia, Syrah is capable of displaying a wide range of aromas and flavors. Cool climate Syrahs tend to express floral notes like violets, along with savory elements like olives, while those grown in warmer climates like Australia are more likely to show black pepper and dark fruit notes such as plum. The grape's versatility allows it to adapt to various climates and soil types, but it maintains its unique characteristics no matter where it is planted.
