The Land

The Iruai Shasta-Cascade Red 2023 is born from the mythical Shasta-Cascade region, encompassing vineyards from the Siskiyou Wilderness in Southern Oregon through the Trinity Alps of California. This "mythical wine growing region" is characterized by a "vast mineral range, a savage elevation, and a generous beauty." This blend captures the essence of this wild and varied area, showcasing the unique terroir of the Shasta-Cascade mountains.

The Wine

This Shasta-Cascade Red is a blend of 40% Trousseau, 25% Pinot Noir, 20% Gamay, 10% Mondeuse, and 5% Blaufränkisch. Expect a complex and layered wine that is described as a "love letter to our winery’s wild new home in Scott Valley." Trousseau brings blood orange notes, Mondeuse adds high-toned black fruit and pepper, and Gamay rounds out the blend with a bitter kick and savory structure. This is a wine designed to be both generous and structured, showcasing the wild beauty of its origins.

The People

Iruai Winery, founded by Chad and Michelle Westbrook Hinds, is located in Etna, CA, within the Shasta-Cascade mountains. They began as a nomadic natural wine project in 2013 before establishing their winery in Etna in 2019. Iruai, pronounced "ear-oo-eye," is the Shasta Indigenous word for Scott Valley, their home. They are dedicated to exploring alpine varietals and creating fun, easy-drinking natural wines that express a sense of place, using minimal intervention and no additives. Their wines are for those seeking something truly different from California, with a clear nod to Old World sensibilities.
