The Land:

Sourced from two exceptional vineyards—Mollards, with its granite soils and 50-year-old vines, and Côte Rozier, with schist-based soils and 60-year-old vines—La Sereine Noire is a pure expression of Côte-Rôtie’s steep, sunlit slopes. The 2022 growing season, marked by warmth and low yields due to drought, produced intensely concentrated fruit with remarkable depth and freshness. These organically farmed, hand-harvested vineyards showcase the synergy of Côte-Rôtie’s unique terroir, balancing power with elegance.

The Wine:

Made entirely from Syrah, La Sereine Noire undergoes fermentation in stainless steel before aging 12-14 months in small oak barrels, with a portion new. Indigenous yeasts guide the fermentation, and only minimal sulfur is used. Partial whole-cluster inclusion varies by vintage, adding layered complexity. The result is a deep, structured wine with brooding black fruit, smoked meat, cracked pepper, and a mineral edge. Velvety tannins and a long, energetic finish reflect the meticulous care taken in both vineyard and cellar.

The People:

Yves Gangloff’s journey into winemaking was unexpected—originally visiting the Rhône to see his brother, he met his future wife, Mathilde, and never left. After working at Delas for seven years, he and Mathilde slowly built their own domaine, learning winemaking out of necessity when their négociant suddenly went bankrupt in 1987. Today, Gangloff’s wines are among the most sought-after in Côte-Rôtie, known for their precision, artistry, and soul. Farming organically and working by hand, Yves and his daughter Elsa continue the family’s dedication to crafting wines that reflect both the land and the passion behind them. Yves’ love for music and art also shines through—his brother Pierre, a painter, creates the domaine’s distinctive labels, while Yves himself is an avid guitarist with a collection of over 30 vintage instruments.

The Rhône Valley is a diverse and historic wine region, divided into two distinct areas. The Northern Rhône is the birthplace of Syrah, with steep, terraced vineyards that produce some of the world's most revered wines, such as those from Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. The Southern Rhône is much more expansive, offering a wider range of styles, but typically based around Grenache-based blends, with wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape known for their complexity and power. While the region is celebrated for its reds, it also produces incredible textured whites, and as a whole the region displays the spectrum of French wine and the incredible differences that can come from small geographic changes.

Rhone Valley

Syrah is a dark-skinned grape of French origin, specifically from the Northern Rhône Valley, where it produces some of the world's most powerful and complex wines. Known as Shiraz in Australia, Syrah is capable of displaying a wide range of aromas and flavors. Cool climate Syrahs tend to express floral notes like violets, along with savory elements like olives, while those grown in warmer climates like Australia are more likely to show black pepper and dark fruit notes such as plum. The grape's versatility allows it to adapt to various climates and soil types, but it maintains its unique characteristics no matter where it is planted.
