The Land

The southwestern slope of Etna has long carried a reputation problem: generally lower in elevation than the celebrated northern slope, warmer, and historically producing wines that lack the tension Etna's best whites are known for. Terre di Montalto occupies the southwestern slope and the conventional wisdom does not apply. The vineyards sit between 860 and 960 meters above sea level in Biancavilla, which is unusually high for this side of the mountain. At that elevation, ocean breezes from the Ionian Sea cut across the terraced plots, slowing ripening and keeping alcohols in check despite the southern exposure. The soils are equally atypical: ancient iron-rich red earth that predates the volcano itself, embedded with "ripiddu," fist-sized basalt fragments from the Ellittico eruption approximately 60,000 years ago. That combination of pre-volcanic soil and ancient lava gives the wines a distinctly ferrous, mineral character that sets them apart from the basalt-dominant profiles of the northern slope.

The Wine

95% Carricante and 5% Catarratto from 60-year-old, own-rooted vines trained in both spalliera (trellis) and albarello (bush vine). Hand harvested and stringently double sorted, first in the vineyard and again at the cellar. Softly pressed and fermented at 13 to 16 degrees Celsius. The wine spends six months on fine lees, followed by six months in stainless steel after racking, twelve months total before bottling, with no wood contact. The result is precise and saline: lemon zest, white peach, fennel frond, and a long mineral finish that traces directly to those iron-bearing soils and ancient basalt fragments underfoot. Carricante at this elevation is Etna Bianco at its most focused.

The People

Three brothers own and farm 6.5 hectares of steep, terraced vines in Biancavilla, in vineyards their family has worked since the late 19th century. They began bottling their own wine in 1980 rather than selling to merchants, and built their own cellar in 2018. Production is entirely autochthonous: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for the reds, Carricante and Catarratto for the whites. Organic farming is the practical default here, not a positioning decision. The winds that push off the Ionian Sea keep disease pressure and pests low enough that chemical intervention is simply unnecessary. In a region where northern-slope provenance drives conversation and pricing, the brothers at Terre di Montalto make one of Etna's most complete whites from terrain most producers overlook.

Food Pairing

High acidity and saline mineral depth make this a natural at the seafood table. Pasta alle vongole, grilled branzino with lemon and capers, a warm octopus salad with good olive oil and celery, or risotto with prawns and saffron all work. The wine's precision cuts through anything rich or buttery without disappearing underneath it. A bottle that earns its place at a real dinner.

Sicily, Italy’s largest island, blends ancient wine traditions with a fresh wave of modern creativity. Its star red grape, Nero d’Avola, thrives in the island’s warm, sun-soaked climate, producing intensely flavored wines with dark fruit and a hint of savory spice. Along the western coast lies the historic heartland of Marsala, a fortified wine prized for both sweet and dry styles. Rising above the island’s varied landscapes is Mount Etna, an active volcano whose mineral-rich soils and cooler elevations result in elegantly structured reds and nuanced whites. From coast to crater, Sicily’s wine culture is as diverse and vibrant as the region itself.

Italy - Sicily

Native to Sicily's Mount Etna, Carricante is a high acid white grape known for minerality. It's at its best on the east slope of the volcano, showing saltiness and texture with ample acidity to age for decades.
