The Land
This Champagne is from the historic and esteemed vineyards of Ludes, a premier cru village nestled on the northern slopes of Montagne de Reims. These cool, northerly-exposed vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate that slows the ripening of Pinot Noir, enhancing its aromatic complexity and elegance. The soils here, rich in chalk and limestone, impart a distinct minerality and salinity, key elements that shape the wine’s precise and expressive character. This terroir, once overlooked in favor of Pinot Meunier, now shines under the direction of Arthur Lelièvre, showing the full potential of Ludes’ Pinot Noir.

The Wine
This sparkling wine features a fruit-forward nose with aromas of red berries, citrus zest, and a delicate floral touch. On the palate, it reveals a refined balance of ripe fruit and vibrant acidity, with a distinctive saline finish that echoes the chalky soils of Ludes. This cuvée undergoes primary fermentation and aging in vapor-sealed oak barrels of 228 and 350 liters, utilizing indigenous yeasts that add layers of texture and nuance. The slow fermentation at cooler temperatures preserves the wine’s freshness, while a judicious use of 20% new oak adds subtle depth without overpowering the wine’s natural brightness. Unfined, unfiltered, and aged on the lees for a minimum of two years followed by 22 months in bottle, this Extra Brut Champagne is both elegant and expressive, with a crisp, dry finish.

The People
Arthur Lelièvre represents the sixth generation of his family’s winemaking legacy at Champagne Forget-Chauvet, where he has redefined the estate’s approach since taking the helm in 2014. Returning to his roots, Arthur transformed his family’s vineyards by adopting sustainable practices, eliminating herbicides, insecticides, and anti-rot treatments to nurture the soil’s natural balance. Drawing inspiration from visionaries like Etienne Calsac and Raphaël Bérêche, Arthur honed his craft, blending tradition with a commitment to minimal intervention. His style is deeply influenced by his explorations of Burgundy and Jura, where he immersed himself in the world of non-interventionist winemaking. The result is a Champagne that is not just a wine, but a personal narrative of Arthur’s journey, the resilience of his vines, and his dedication to showcasing the unique terroir of Ludes.
