The Land

This Riesling comes from Weingut Bründlmayer's Kamptaler Terrassen vineyards, located in the heart of the Kamptal region of Austria. This region is known for its diverse geology and steep, terraced vineyards that are not as jagged as those of neighboring regions. These unique terraces create their own mesoclimates. The primary rock, loess, and clay soils, along with the Danube and Kamp rivers and the surrounding forests, contribute to the region's large diurnal temperature swings, essential for a long growing season. This bottling is a blend of fruit from younger terraced sites, including the Steinmassl and Steinberg vineyards, and also includes younger vines from Heiligenstein.

The Wine

The 2021 bottling presents a fruit-driven expression of Riesling with noticeable mineral nuances and good aging potential, which comes from the elevated terraces of the blend. The fruit from lower sited terraces ripens earlier and lends an approachable character. The aromas are expressive, offering a range of citrus and stone fruits along with floral notes and a flinty minerality. The palate is crisp and refreshing, with a focused acidity and a long, lingering finish. It's a wine that aims for purity and precision, showcasing the inherent characteristics of the Riesling grape and the unique conditions of the Kamptal region. It's fermented in stainless steel to allow the fruit and terroir to shine.

The People

Weingut Bründlmayer is a highly respected Austrian estate, known for producing some of the country's best wines. Willi Bründlmayer, with the help of Andreas Wickhoff MW, farms 90 hectares of vineyards, with a high proportion of old vines. His commitment to both tradition and innovation is evident in his use of the Lyre training system. The estate is now certified organic by LACON, and they employ a minimal-intervention philosophy in the cellar. It is clear their aim is to craft wines that are authentic and expressive of the Kamptal.

Niederösterreich, or Lower Austria, is Austria's largest and most diverse Qualitätswein region. Encompassing eight distinct wine-growing areas from Wachau (a separate region on this website) in the west to Carnuntum in the east, Niederösterreich is best understood through its three main climate zones: the Weinviertel to the north, the Danube region and its valleys west of Vienna, and the Pannonian southeast. The Danube region, while including the separately-presented Wachau, also encompasses the renowned Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental, and Wagram subregions, each celebrated for their expressions of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, often grown on loess soils. Weinviertel, the largest subregion, is famed for its peppery Grüner Veltliner, marked by the Weinviertel DAC. In contrast, the Pannonian climate in the southeast yields outstanding red wines, particularly Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, and regionally typical whites.

Austria - Niederosterreich

Riesling is a truly noble grape, known for its incredibly high acidity and a flavor profile that can range from bone dry to lusciously sweet. Germany is its heartland, and it's responsible for some of the world's most age-worthy examples, but Riesling also thrives in Austria, where it usually is dry. In Alsace, it takes on a slightly richer texture, while in parts of Australia, like the Clare and Eden Valleys, it displays a uniquely powerful and lime-tinged aromatic profile. This is a grape that has no problem showcasing its origins, and it's a fantastic example of how one variety can show many different expressions, each with its own unique appeal.
