The Land

The Zahel Das Picnic Grüner Veltliner originates from vineyards scattered across Vienna, one of the few world capitals with a significant winegrowing tradition within its city limits. The vineyards sit on a patchwork of loess, limestone, sandstone, and gravel soils along the foothills surrounding the city, benefiting from warm Pannonian influences from the east and cooling air descending from the Vienna Woods to the west. This combination allows grapes to achieve full ripeness while retaining the vibrant acidity that defines Austria’s finest white wines. The vineyards are farmed organically, reflecting the estate’s long-standing commitment to sustainable viticulture and healthy vineyard ecosystems.

The Wine

Das Picnic is designed as a fresh, approachable expression of Grüner Veltliner, showcasing the variety’s naturally vibrant and food-friendly character. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve freshness and purity, with the wine bottled in the traditional one-liter format that remains a hallmark of Austrian wine culture. This vintage delivers bright aromas of green apple, citrus, white peach, and fresh herbs, alongside Grüner’s signature hint of white pepper. Light-bodied and energetic on the palate, it combines crisp acidity with subtle mineral notes and a clean, refreshing finish that makes you suddenly want to have a picnic in the park and sip this wine.

The People

The Zahel family has been making wine in Vienna since the 1930s and is today regarded as one of the city’s benchmark producers. Led by Richard Zahel and his family, the estate has become known for championing Vienna’s unique wine culture while embracing organic farming and a thoughtful, low-intervention approach in both vineyard and cellar. Their wines balance precision and drinkability, offering authentic expressions of Vienna’s diverse vineyard sites. While Zahel produces serious single-vineyard wines that showcase the complexity of Vienna’s terroir, Das Picnic represents another important aspect of Austrian wine culture: uncomplicated, delicious wines meant to be enjoyed around the table with friends. The result is a Grüner Veltliner that is distinctly Viennese, highly versatile, and remarkably easy to love.

Food Pairing

The Zahel Das Picnic Grüner Veltliner is an ideal companion for warm-weather fare, pairing obviously with schnitzel, grilled chicken, fresh salads, veggie sandwiches, and picnic classics, while its bright acidity and signature Grüner peppery lift make it especially refreshing alongside asparagus, herbs, and mild Asian cuisine.

Niederösterreich, or Lower Austria, is Austria's largest and most diverse Qualitätswein region. Encompassing eight distinct wine-growing areas from Wachau (a separate region on this website) in the west to Carnuntum in the east, Niederösterreich is best understood through its three main climate zones: the Weinviertel to the north, the Danube region and its valleys west of Vienna, and the Pannonian southeast. The Danube region, while including the separately-presented Wachau, also encompasses the renowned Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental, and Wagram subregions, each celebrated for their expressions of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, often grown on loess soils. Weinviertel, the largest subregion, is famed for its peppery Grüner Veltliner, marked by the Weinviertel DAC. In contrast, the Pannonian climate in the southeast yields outstanding red wines, particularly Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, and regionally typical whites.

Austria - Niederosterreich

The wines are typically medium-bodied and exceptionally food-friendly, offering a unique combination of freshness and complexity. Grüner Veltliner is a grape that is clearly expressive of its origins, and it is a cornerstone of Austrian winemaking excellence.
