The Land
The "Caladu" Cannonau di Sardegna comes from Cardedu's vineyards near Jerzu, also located on Sardinia's southeast coast, though further inland. The vines here are planted in ragged-dry cliffs with schist soils. The Cannonau vines, which average 25-50 years old, benefit from these soils, and the estate's unique approach to farming, resulting in fruit of great depth and freshness.
The Wine
This 2022 Cannonau (Grenache) displays an aromatic profile of spice and smoke, with a core of fleshy red plums and raspberries. The wine is made with a focus on expressing the old vine character, which is balanced by the freshness that comes from the decomposed granite soils of their vineyards. The wine is made with minimal intervention to best express the fruit and terroir, which results in a characterful and compelling wine. Cardedu uses the old spelling of this variety with only one ‘N’.
The People
Sergio Loi is a fourth-generation traditional Sardinian producer who has continued his family's tradition of no-chemical farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. His wines are known to be highly drinkable, yet also have a distinct character, which allows them to pair with a range of foods. Cardedu aims to balance tradition with a modern sensibility, and creates wines that are both fresh and compelling expressions of Sardinia.
