The Land

The Chateau Yvonne Saumur Blanc originates from 8 parcels in Parnay, Turquant, and Montsoreau, all bordering the Loire River. These parcels, which include Le Bourreau, Clos Coin, Les Devants, Chateau Gaillard, and La Vignole, all show the unique tuffeau terroir of the Côte in Parnay, which is primarily made up of clay-limestone soils over tuffeau stones. The vineyards range in vine age from 5 years to over 80 years and have been farmed organically since 1997.

The Wine

The 2022 Yvonne Blanc is 100% Chenin Blanc. The wine is made with a three-hour pressing, followed by a settling period in tanks before fermentation with native yeasts on the lees in 225L barrels. The wine is then aged for 12 months in barrel (20% new) before being assembled in steel tanks for three months prior to bottling. This wine aims to show the unique terroir of the area with a clear focus on quality and a balanced intensity. This wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The People

Château Yvonne, located in Parnay, has been surrounded by vineyards since the middle ages, and the château itself dates back to the 16th century, though it wasn't until 1813 when a local winemaker began producing wine there. Yvonne and Jean-François Lamunière decided to recreate the abandoned vineyard in 1997 with the help of Francoise Foucault. In 2007 Mathieu Vallee took over and decided to keep the name Chateau Yvonne, in homage to the previous owners. Today the domaine is considered one of the best in Saumur. They have long had an emphasis on organic farming practices, and seek to show a clear expression of the area through their wines.

The Loire Valley, often referred to as the "Garden of France," is a revered wine region that stretches along the Loire River, producing an array of distinct wines, including the crisp, sea-breeze influenced Muscadet near the Atlantic coast, the versatile and expressive Chenin Blanc in regions like Vouvray and Anjou, the elegantly fragrant Cabernet Franc from Chinon and Bourgueil, and the minerally complex Sauvignon Blanc-based Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé from its eastern vineyards. This is a reflection of the valley's varied terroir and climate, which together foster the creation of wines that are celebrated for their finesse, diversity, and food-friendliness.
