The Land
"Poilu’s Pinard" highlights the diversity of California’s Cienega Valley, where limestone-rich soils and a coastal-influenced climate create ideal conditions for a variety of grape varietals. This is a co-fermentation of Zinfandel, Mourvèdre, Muscat, Grenache, and Cabernet Pfeffer, all sourced from organically and sustainably farmed vineyards. Each varietal contributes its unique character, coming together in a harmonious and expressive blend.

The Wine
This playful yet complex red blend draws inspiration from rustic Old World wines while embracing the energy of California. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in neutral French oak, "Poilu’s Pinard" offers vibrant aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, violets, and dried herbs, with hints of black pepper and a floral lift from Muscat. On the palate, notes of ripe plum, earthy spice, and a subtle minerality are balanced by soft tannins and refreshing acidity. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with minimal sulfur, it’s a natural, pure expression of the land and vintage.

The People
Winemaker James Jelks, founder of Florez Wines, named this wine after the cherished Pinard—slang for the rationed wine loved by French infantrymen in WWI. These soldiers, often rustic countrymen with bushy mustaches, were affectionately nicknamed poilus or “the hairy ones.” James honors this history with a wine that celebrates simplicity, authenticity, and camaraderie. The label art, designed by tattoo artist Drew Nelson, further reflects the blend’s unique personality and roots.
