The Land
From 50+ year-old vines in Mendocino’s Redwood Valley, the 2023 "Savvy B" reflects the care and dedication of the Upton family, who have farmed this vineyard organically since 1990. Nestled in a cool-climate pocket of Northern California, the vines benefit from temperate days and chilly nights, fostering vibrant acidity and layered complexity. Brought to life in Santa Cruz County, the wine also reflects Florez Wines’ commitment to local, sustainably farmed fruit and the spirit of Santa Cruz’s coastal terroir.
The Wine
After an overnight skin contact maceration, fermentation took place in stainless steel to preserve its bright aromatics, while 35% was aged in neutral French oak to add texture and nuance—a first for this cuvée. Aged sur lie for six months and bottled without filtration or sulfur, the "Savvy B" bursts with aromas of lime zest, grapefruit, and elderflower, complemented by flavors of green apple, tropical fruit, and a mineral-driven salinity. Its zippy acidity and round texture. The wine is a little hazy but very interesting and is a different experience than the majority of boring Sauvignon Blanc! This is why we’re excited about California new wave wine producers; an affordable, organic wine that pushes boundaries of the expected.
The People
Florez Wines was founded in 2017 by James Jelks, a Santa Cruz native driven by a passion for old-world techniques and natural winemaking. With experience spanning UC Davis’ Enology & Viticulture program and global winemaking adventures, Jelks returned to his roots to craft wines that honor the land and prioritize health and pleasure. His ethos—minimal intervention and organic practices—ensures wines like the "Savvy B" are as honest as they are vibrant.
