The Land

The Iruai Nebbiolo "Giallo" 2023 is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes grown at 3,000 ft elevation within California AVA, specifically in the Shasta-Cascade region. This high-altitude site provides the cool climate and terroir needed to produce Nebbiolo with a distinct alpine character. The vineyard's elevation contributes to the wine's "brooding and perfumed beast" profile.

The Wine

This 100% Nebbiolo bottling, named "Giallo" after Italian pulp horror films, is an homage to the rugged and savage Nebbiolo wines of the Valtellina region in the Italian Alps. The wine is aged for 90 days on the skins, resulting in a "brooding and perfumed beast" that "attacks you with concentrated spice and groovy texture." Expect aromas of ripe plum and rose petals, intertwined with notes of garrigue and dark chocolate. The palate is described as "sexy, hypnotic, and set to Italo Disco," offering a unique and compelling California Nebbiolo experience.

The People

Iruai Winery, founded by Chad and Michelle Westbrook Hinds, is located in Etna, CA, within the Shasta-Cascade mountains. They began as a nomadic natural wine project in 2013 before establishing their winery in Etna in 2019. Iruai, pronounced "ear-oo-eye," is the Shasta Indigenous word for Scott Valley, their home. They are dedicated to exploring alpine varietals and creating fun, easy-drinking natural wines that express a sense of place, using minimal intervention and no additives. Their wines are for those seeking something truly different from California, with a clear nod to Old World sensibilities.
