The Land

The Julian Haart 1,000L Riesling 2023 hails from the prestigious Goldtröpfchen vineyard, a Grand Cru site in the heart of the Mosel Valley. Known for its steep, slate-covered slopes that bask in optimal sun exposure, this vineyard produces wines of remarkable complexity and character. The vines, now 25 years old, are deeply rooted in the mineral-rich soils, imparting a distinct minerality to the wine. The unique microclimate of warm days and cool nights ensures a brisk, vibrant acidity, allowing the Riesling grapes to ripen slowly and fully develop their aromatic potential.

The Wine

Legally classified as Trocken (denotes dryness, a term legally reserved for wines that possess no more than 9 grams of residual sugar per liter). This Riesling showcases a dry style with an alcohol content of around 11.5%. The wine takes its name from the “1,000L” Fuder barrel that was exclusively selected and purchased for this bottling. Known for its tension and precision, this wine is characterized by high-toned citrus notes, including lemon zest and lime, accompanied by nuances of green apple and white peach. The palate is brisk and refreshing, with a taut structure and a core of pronounced minerality. Layers of slate and a subtle salinity add depth and complexity, leading to a long, crisp finish that is both mouthwatering and memorable.

The People

Julian Haart, a visionary winemaker of the Mosel, brings a wealth of experience from his time working with legends like Egon Müller and Klaus Peter Keller. His winemaking philosophy emphasizes the importance of terroir and minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard’s unique characteristics to take center stage. Julian’s meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar results in wines that are both expressive and refined.

Mosel

Riesling is a truly noble grape, known for its incredibly high acidity and a flavor profile that can range from bone dry to lusciously sweet. Germany is its heartland, and it's responsible for some of the world's most age-worthy examples, but Riesling also thrives in Austria, where it usually is dry. In Alsace, it takes on a slightly richer texture, while in parts of Australia, like the Clare and Eden Valleys, it displays a uniquely powerful and lime-tinged aromatic profile. This is a grape that has no problem showcasing its origins, and it's a fantastic example of how one variety can show many different expressions, each with its own unique appeal.
