The Land
Danilo Thomain's Enfer d'Arvier is a unique wine born from the steep, terraced vineyards of the Valle d'Aosta region in Italy. This appellation is the second-highest winegrowing zone in the valley, forming a splendorous, amphitheater-shaped site overlooking the Dora Baltea/Doire Baltée river below. The "hell of Arvier," as it is known, is a challenging site with intense sun exposure and is only 5 hectares in size. Danilo Thomain is the sole independent bottler of wine here, working one hectare of Petit Rouge vines. He is actively expanding his holdings by clearing and de-foresting another hectare of hillside, reclaiming terrain with viticultural records dating back to the 13th century.
The Wine
The Danilo Thomain Valle d'Aosta Enfer d'Arvier 2022 showcases the unique characteristics of its extreme mountain terroir. The wine offers a captivating tension between the region's scorching days and chilly nights, resulting in a palate that features a tug-of-war between bright, rapier-like acidity and a core of luscious fruit. Aromas of fresh, crushed wild berries, subtle earthiness, and alpine herbs lead to a palate that is both rustic and vibrant, with a lively energy. Made traditionally in cuve, this wine expresses the pure character of the Petit Rouge grape and the terroir of Arvier with a refreshing, savory quality and the capacity to age beautifully.
The People
Danilo Thomain is the only independent producer in the tiny Enfer d’Arvier appellation, a place where most of the output goes to the local co-op. He is deeply committed to showcasing this unique region, and his family has deep roots in this land. He produces only a few hundred cases each vintage and is now actively working to expand his vineyards. His dedication to traditional winemaking methods and his minimal-intervention approach allows the distinct terroir and the wild energy of this mountain landscape to shine through.
