The Land

Case Nere is a La Morra vineyard with southeast exposure at approximately 350 meters. The soils are silty clay with a notable clay component that provides both structure and freshness. The vines are mixed-age: 20% are 60 years old, the balance planted more recently. Older vines in La Morra's calcaire soils produce less fruit with more textural complexity and a longer finish; the younger vines add color and weight. "Case Nere" translates as "black houses," a reference to historic farm buildings on the site. Like Fossati, it sits within the commune that defines the more aromatic, rounder end of the Barolo typology.

The Wine

100% Nebbiolo. Steccatura post-fermentation skin contact, aged in a mix of barrique and large vats. Bottled unfiltered. The 2013 vintage in Barolo was classically structured: a cool, late-ripening year with firm tannins and high acidity. Harvest began in late October, among the latest in recent memory. These wines needed time. At 12+ years, the 2013 Case Nere is arriving at what the vintage promised: dried roses, cherry, crushed stone, asphalt, iron, and a background note of orange peel. The tannins remain present but are integrated. This is Barolo for people who understand that the wait is part of the point.

The People

Enzo Boglietti started in 1991 making modern, internationally-oriented Barolo alongside his neighbor Roberto Voerzio: short macerations, French barriques, early-drinking structure. He has spent the past 15 years systematically undoing that approach, replacing smaller oak with larger casks, reducing extraction, reintroducing the steccatura technique for post-fermentation skin contact, and eliminating filtration at bottling. Case Nere has been in the lineup since the early years of the estate; the winemaking around it has changed significantly. What has not changed is the site.

Food Pairing

Truffle pasta with butter and Parmigiano, osso buco with gremolata and risotto, aged Toma Piemontese, or roast rack of lamb with anchovy butter. The cool-vintage freshness and iron-mineral quality make it particularly well-suited to earthy or funky elements.

Piedmont, framed by the Alps in northwestern Italy, is a land of rolling hills and carefully cultivated vineyards. The continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, creates prime conditions for the Nebbiolo grape, which dominates much of the region's red wine production. The Langhe area is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, structured red wines known for their complex aromas, firm tannins, and aging potential. While Nebbiolo is the dominant grape of Piedmont, the region also makes interesting white wines like those from Arneis and Timorasso. Alto Piemonte is a separate region in the north with its own distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo, alongside other red grape varietals.

Italy - Piedmont

Nebbiolo, a prestigious grape from Italy's Piedmont region, is celebrated for its profound truffle and rose aromas, complex flavors, and ability to age gracefully thanks to strong acidity and tannins, producing the renowned Barolo and Barbaresco wines.
