The Land

Domane Serrig Vogelsang Kabinett 2021 comes from the Vogelsang vineyard in Serrig, located in the Saar region of Germany. This historic site, now a monopole of Markus Molitor, is on a steep, south and southwest-facing slope of reddish slate, rising from 220 to 340 meters above sea level. Vogelsang was once part of the Prussian state domaine, built in 1904, and was considered a model estate until after World War II. Markus Molitor acquired the long-neglected domaine in 2016 and is in the process of restoring it and its 25 hectares of Riesling vines, of which only 5 hectares of old vines were deemed worth preserving, with the rest replanted with quality selections.

The Wine

This 2021 Kabinett is a "feinherb" (off-dry) style, yet drinks remarkably dry, a hallmark of this cooler vintage. Made from 100% Riesling, hand-picked and gently basket-pressed, it undergoes spontaneous fermentation in large wooden barrels. Showcasing the vintage's intense acidity, this Kabinett offers a spectacularly fine and mineral nose with concentrated, elegant fruit and a cool, herbal spice. Expect a nose of precise and elegant fruit intertwined with flinty minerality and cool nettle and mint nuances. The palate is pure, lush, and round yet also very mineral and playful, with a saline drive counterpointing the discreet sweetness. The finish is spectacularly long and tensioned. This is a classic Kabinett, sustainably saline, aromatic, and charming.

The People

Domane Serrig represents Markus Molitor's dedication to resurrecting a historic Saar estate and showcasing the unique potential of the Vogelsang vineyard. Molitor, a respected Mosel producer, acquired this neglected Prussian state domaine in 2016 and is committed to restoring its vineyards and cellars to their former glory. His meticulous approach and minimal intervention winemaking aim to create wines that rival the Saar's icons, capturing the essence of this exceptional site.

The Mosel, a stunning river valley in Germany, is a region synonymous with Riesling. The area's steep, slate slopes create a unique terroir that imparts a distinct minerality and high acidity to the wines. Mosel Rieslings range from bone dry to intensely sweet, showcasing the grape's versatility and the region's incredible potential for producing complex, age-worthy wines. The wines of the Mosel are known for their aromatic complexity and their incredibly graceful nature, and are a benchmark for all Riesling made throughout the world.

Germany - Mosel

Riesling is a truly noble grape, known for its incredibly high acidity and a flavor profile that can range from bone dry to lusciously sweet. Germany is its heartland, and it's responsible for some of the world's most age-worthy examples, but Riesling also thrives in Austria, where it usually is dry. In Alsace, it takes on a slightly richer texture, while in parts of Australia, like the Clare and Eden Valleys, it displays a uniquely powerful and lime-tinged aromatic profile. This is a grape that has no problem showcasing its origins, and it's a fantastic example of how one variety can show many different expressions, each with its own unique appeal.
