The Land
Castell'in Villa's originates from the historic estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga, situated at the southern edge of the Chianti Classico region. The estate spans 298 hectares, with 54 hectares dedicated to vineyards nestled among olive groves and forests. The vineyards are predominantly south-facing, benefiting from optimal sunlight, and are planted on alluvial soils rich in pebbles and sand, contributing to the wine's distinctive minerality and depth.

The Wine
100% Sangiovese. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, preserving the purity of the fruit, followed by aging in large Slavonian oak casks known as 'botti.' The wine is then held back in bottle to develop added complexity and refinement before release. It exhibits classic aromas and flavors of dried red fruits and flowers, minerals, and a dusty, earthy core that is uniquely Tuscan. On the palate, it offers well-integrated acidity and balanced structure, with an energy and lift that make it both approachable in its youth and capable of aging gracefully.

The People
Since acquiring the estate in 1968, proprietress Principessa Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa has been dedicated to producing some of the most traditionally crafted, age-worthy wines in Chianti. Under her guidance, Castell'in Villa has eliminated the use of white grapes in their wines, focusing solely on Sangiovese to express the true character of the region. Her commitment to tradition and quality is evident in the estate's extensive library of older vintages, including the renowned Chianti Classico Riserva 1971, which continues to showcase the longevity and elegance that define Castell'in Villa's wines.

Tuscany is one of Italy’s most iconic wine regions, anchored by historic regions like Chianti and Montalcino, where Sangiovese thrives in clay-limestone soils and varying elevations. Chianti Classico produces medium-bodied, savory reds, while Montalcino’s warmer, drier conditions give rise to the powerful and long-lived Brunello. Along the Tuscan coast, regions like Bolgheri emerged in the late 20th century with the rise of Super Tuscans—often blends of international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grown in marine-influenced soils. While overwhelmingly known for red wines, Tuscany is also home to great classic whites grown in San Gimignano and modern whites often made with French grape varieties.

Italy - Tuscany

Sangiovese is Italy’s most widely planted red grape and the backbone of many of the country’s most renowned wines, including Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Its name likely derives from the Latin “sanguis Jovis,” or “blood of Jupiter,” hinting at its ancient Roman roots. While native to central Italy, particularly Tuscany, it is also grown in regions like Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, and even scattered sites abroad. Sangiovese is known for its high acidity, firm tannins, and bright red fruit character, often showing notes of sour cherry, dried herbs, and earthy spice. Its structure and versatility make it a natural match for food and a compelling lens through which to explore regional terroirs.
