The Land

The "La Breña" 1er Cru comes from a 0.5-hectare parcel of Garnacha located in the Sierra de Gredos, near other key vineyard sites, most notably Rumbo al Norte. These vines, around 60 years old, are planted on sandy soils weathered from granite, slate, and sandstone. The high altitude (around 1100 meters), combined with a mild and humid microclimate (for central Spain), gives rise to wines that are particularly aromatic with an intense depth.

The Wine

This 2022 Garnacha is made with a focus on purity and elegance. It is fermented with native yeasts in an oak vat with whole clusters and a 60-day maceration, then sees an elevage of 10 months in a large, used French oak vat. Expect a bright, forward expression with rounded tannins and a sleek texture. The wine shows a pure expression of the Garnacha grape, with a seamless integration of fruit and minerality. It is clearly a product of its unique terroir and the minimal intervention approach used in the cellar.

The People

Comando G is the creation of Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia, two childhood friends who returned to the Sierra de Gredos to explore its potential and rescue abandoned old-vine Garnacha. They are committed to biodynamic and low intervention practices. Their vision is to redefine Garnacha by showing what the region and its old vines can do by focusing on their potential and crafting wines that can rival the best of both Burgundy and the Northern Rhone.

Castilla y León, a vast region in north-central Spain, is defined by a high-altitude plateau and a continental climate shaped by the Duero River. The region is known primarily for its red wines, with Ribera del Duero leading the charge with powerful Tempranillo-based wines, though Toro and Bierzo also contribute, alongside emerging white wines. On the southern border is the Sierra de Gredos, a separate region within the same broader area, known for its high-altitude vineyards and elegant Grenache (Garnacha) wines. The diverse soils, ranging from alluvial to sandy, clay, and gravel, combined with significant temperature swings between day and night, allow for the slow ripening of grapes, resulting in concentrated flavors and good acidity.

Spain - Castilla y Leon

Grenache is a widely planted grape variety that thrives in its Mediterranean home. In Spain, it's known as Garnacha, where it reaches its peak in the Sierra de Gredos as a pure varietal wine, while also being a key blending component in Rioja. France's Southern Rhône, notably Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is another well-known region, where Grenache is often the base of a blended wine. Grenache also finds a home in Sardinia as Cannonau, and it has spread beyond its Mediterranean origins, most famously to Australia's Barossa Valley. The resulting wines are typically light in color, yet they possess a full body and flavor, displaying mature red fruit notes, herbal spices, and often a hint of orange peel, along with soft tannins and moderate acidity. It is an incredibly versatile grape, showing different expressions based on its terroir and the winemaking style employed.
