The Land

The "Peña La Mora" 1er Cru is a new bottling from Comando G, sourced from a vineyard in Navatalgordo on the western edge of the DO Cebreros. The site is at a lower altitude than their El Tamboril Grand Cru. The soils are white, sandy, and marked by a high proportion of quartz, which is a result of the weathering of granite. This unique soil and site contribute to wines with a firmer tannic structure and a more chiseled fruit expression. The wines from here are more reserved, but show great potential.

The Wine

This 2022 Garnacha, made with a focus on highlighting its particular terroir, offers a complex array of red fruits, minerals, and an intriguing, elegant structure. It is designed to show the subtle differences that can occur even between parcels from the same village. The wine is fermented with native yeast and sees an elevage of about 10 months in used French oak. Expect a compelling aromatic profile with a freshness and a power that is unique to the vintage.

The People

Comando G is the vision of Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia, two childhood friends who returned to the Sierra de Gredos to showcase the potential of old Garnacha vineyards, and in so doing are helping to elevate the whole region. They are committed to biodynamic viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking and it is clear that their aim is to create wines that can be compared with the best of Burgundy and the Northern Rhône.

Castilla y León, a vast region in north-central Spain, is defined by a high-altitude plateau and a continental climate shaped by the Duero River. The region is known primarily for its red wines, with Ribera del Duero leading the charge with powerful Tempranillo-based wines, though Toro and Bierzo also contribute, alongside emerging white wines. On the southern border is the Sierra de Gredos, a separate region within the same broader area, known for its high-altitude vineyards and elegant Grenache (Garnacha) wines. The diverse soils, ranging from alluvial to sandy, clay, and gravel, combined with significant temperature swings between day and night, allow for the slow ripening of grapes, resulting in concentrated flavors and good acidity.

Spain - Castilla y Leon

Grenache is a widely planted grape variety that thrives in its Mediterranean home. In Spain, it's known as Garnacha, where it reaches its peak in the Sierra de Gredos as a pure varietal wine, while also being a key blending component in Rioja. France's Southern Rhône, notably Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is another well-known region, where Grenache is often the base of a blended wine. Grenache also finds a home in Sardinia as Cannonau, and it has spread beyond its Mediterranean origins, most famously to Australia's Barossa Valley. The resulting wines are typically light in color, yet they possess a full body and flavor, displaying mature red fruit notes, herbal spices, and often a hint of orange peel, along with soft tannins and moderate acidity. It is an incredibly versatile grape, showing different expressions based on its terroir and the winemaking style employed.
