The Land

The "Winkl" Sauvignon comes from Cantina Terlano in Alto Adige, Italy. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is grown in the Terlano DOC, from vineyards with a south to southwest orientation and slopes ranging from 5 to 70%. Vineyard altitudes range from 280 to 580 meters above sea level. The "Winkl" site, one of Terlano's oldest vineyards, is known for consistently producing exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, showcasing the terroir of Alto Adige.

The Wine

This 2023 Sauvignon "Winkl" is crafted through manual harvest and selection, gentle pressing, and natural sedimentation. Fermentation is slow and temperature-controlled in stainless steel tanks. It is aged on the lees for 7-8 months, partly in stainless steel (80%) and partly in large wooden barrels (20%). Expect a fresh light yellow color with slightly greenish nuances. The nose is juicy and delicately fruity with a distinct minerality. Aromas of aniseed, mint, and sage mingle with apricot, mandarin, honeydew melon, and passion fruit. The palate is complex yet delicate, offering a creamy softness balanced by aromatic minerality, with a very long finish. The 2023 vintage offers fresh, fruity wines with slightly lower alcohol levels, resulting in a balanced and elegant Sauvignon Blanc.

The People

Cantina Terlano, founded in 1893, stands as one of Alto Adige's leading growers' cooperatives, now uniting 143 dedicated growers. This cooperative, while substantial in size, maintains a strong focus on quality, earning both Italian and international recognition. Their modern winery, expanded and refurbished in 2009, provides 18,000 cubic meters of storage space, ensuring optimal and undisturbed wine development. Cantina Terlano markets its wines in two distinct lines, "Selections" and "Traditional," and annually releases a rare wine after at least a decade of cellaring, showcasing their deep commitment to longevity. The cooperative is led by Chairman Georg Eyrl and Deputy Chairman Hansjörg Hafner, alongside a board of members, all dedicated to upholding Terlano's reputation for excellence.
