The Land
Soave has a reputation problem. Decades of high-yield production from the flat plains south of the town left the appellation associated with thin, characterless whites, and the stigma has been slow to lift. The hillside zone at the Classico heart of Soave is an entirely different story: steep terraces of ancient volcanic basalt and white limestone above the town, soils bearing black fossilized rock alongside pure white stone, with vine ages that rival serious producers anywhere. Corte Mainente's parcels hold Garganega vines between 60 and 80 years old on this terraced hillside. The wine is labeled Veronese IGT rather than Soave, a deliberate choice to sidestep the appellation's complicated reputation and let the wine present itself on its own terms.
The Wine
100% Garganega from steep hillside terraces with 60-80 year old vines, fermented and aged in concrete, no wood contact. The Mainente brothers favor concrete over stainless steel, finding it gives the wine more texture without adding any flavor of its own. The cellar approach is clean and unfussy: preserve the fruit, let the site come through. The result has real density and precision: white melon, bitter almond, orange zest, a saline mineral finish that traces directly to the volcanic fossils in the soil. It reads like a crisper Bourgogne Blanc with a savory, slightly bitter edge that is distinctly northeastern Italian.
The People
Ugo Mainente has bottled 60 consecutive vintages of Bianco Secco from this hillside site in Soave. That number, more than any descriptor, tells you what this family values. His sons have since joined the estate, bringing broader visibility without altering the approach that has defined Corte Mainente for three generations. The estate is small: less than ten hectares of steep terraced vines above the town, farmed with patience. The bottling sold in the United States comes from the family's favorite Soave vineyard parcel, selected by the importer and declassified to Veronese IGT to remove the Soave label's noise from the conversation. What is in the glass matters more than the appellation politics around it.
Food Pairing
Garganega at this level calls for Italian food done simply and well. Risotto with asparagus and aged Parmigiano, linguine alle vongole, grilled branzino with lemon and olive oil, or a summer plate of prosciutto and ripe melon all work. The bitter almond note in the finish plays well with almonds and marcona olives before dinner. A wine that makes Italian cooking feel effortless.
