  • Soil Type: The vines were planted in 1985 and are deeply rooted in decomposed granite and limestone soils, a combination that mirrors the terroir of the Loire Valley but with a Californian twist. This unique soil composition lends the wine a distinctive minerality, reminiscent of oyster shells, adding depth and complexity to its flavor profile.

  • Elevation: Perched at an impressive altitude of 1800 feet, the vineyard benefits from a south-facing aspect that maximizes sunlight exposure.

  • Grape Varieties: 100% Melon de Bourgogne. This wine pays homage to the traditional expressions of the variety found in the Loire Valley. The choice of this grape, combined with the unique terroir of the Chalone appellation, results in a wine that balances traditional Loire Valley characteristics with the distinctive qualities of its Californian origin.

  • Winemaking: The grapes were harvested under the cover of night to preserve their freshness and whole cluster pressed into a combination of concrete eggs and stainless steel. This technique, along with spontaneous fermentation and sur lie élevage, emphasizes the wine's natural fruit characteristics and terroir-driven minerality, showcasing the winemaker's minimalist approach.

  • Farming Practices: Jolie Laide's commitment to organic farming practices is evident in their careful selection of vineyard sites and their hands-off approach in the cellar. This dedication to sustainability not only respects the environment but also ensures the wine's purity and authenticity.

  • Tasting Notes: The wine opens with a fresh bouquet of sea breeze, green apple, Asian pear, and lemon zest. On the palate, it presents a striking balance between its mouthwatering acidity and the pronounced minerality that evokes images of oyster shells, delivering a refreshingly crisp finish.

  • Pairing: This wine is an exquisite match for seafood, particularly shellfish like oysters and clams, where its minerality and acidity complement the brininess of the dishes. It also pairs well with light poultry dishes and salads that feature citrus-based dressings.

About the Producer: Jolie Laide, translating to "Pretty-Ugly," is a term of endearment for the unconventionally beautiful. Scott Schultz's journey from Wine Director at Bouchon in Napa Valley to the inception of Jolie Laide in 2010 reflects a passion for winemaking that embraces the unique and diverse. The winery is known for its organic farming practices, exceptional vineyard sites, and innovative winemaking that allows the varietal and terroir to shine. Each vintage features new labels by different artists or art collectives, celebrating the uniqueness of each season.
