Meyer-Fonné Riesling Pfoeller 2019

The Land

The Pfoeller vineyard, a diminutive but treasured 0.5-hectare parcel, sits upon Alsace’s renowned “muschelkalk” soils—limestone rich with fossilized marine life, imbuing the Riesling with its hallmark minerality and vibrancy. The vineyard, planted in 1982, thrives under Alsace's semi-continental climate, where warm, sunny days and cool nights create the ideal conditions for slow ripening. This balance fosters a Riesling with exceptional precision, purity, and aromatic intensity, reflecting the unique interplay of soil and sky.

The Wine

Riesling Pfoeller 2019 exemplifies balance and elegance. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and large oak barrels over 1-3 months, the wine is meticulously nurtured on fine lees until bottling the following September. The result is a wine of exquisite finesse, with crystalline acidity that complements its layered aromas of citrus zest, white peach, and spring flowers. A signature minerality weaves through the palate, leading to a finish that is both racy and enduring. This is a wine equally enjoyable in its youth for its vibrancy and suitable for extended aging, where it will develop further complexity.

The People

Félix Meyer, a third-generation winemaker, brings a modern sensibility to the traditions passed down through his family since the domaine's founding in the late 19th century. Since taking the helm in 1992, Félix has combined technical innovation with a deep respect for Alsace’s terroir, elevating Meyer-Fonné into the upper echelon of the region’s producers. Practicing organic viticulture, Meyer demonstrates a keen intuition for blending parcels into cuvées of remarkable depth and harmony. With each bottle, he captures the essence of Alsace: its heritage, its land, and its future.

The Alsace wine region is located in northeastern France and is known for producing aromatic white wines. The region benefits from a cool climate with a combination of continental and maritime influences, allowing for the cultivation of grape varieties like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. Pinot Noir has also been making major strides in this border region.
