The Land
This Champagne comes from Mesnil-sur-Oger, a Grand Cru village located in the southern part of the Côte des Blancs region, and near the famed Chétillons vineyard. This wine comes from the "du Haut" portion of that area, a site known for giving wines with precision and tension. The vines are all 100% Chardonnay and are farmed with the same meticulous attention as the rest of Dhondt's holdings, following organic and biodynamic principles, although they are not certified. It’s all about a connection to the land and a healthy soil.
The Wine
The Adrien Dhondt Extra-Brut Mesnil-sur-Oger Chetillons du Haut 2019 is a pure expression of Chardonnay from a highly prized area. It showcases the unique terroir of Mesnil with elegance and precision, and a mere 1 g/L dosage. Expect bright citrus, with lemon, and grapefruit, plus a chalky minerality, and a slight saline character. The texture is refined and silky, with a persistent mousse and a long, focused finish that speaks to the quality of this special site. This wine gets an impressive amount of time on its lees (3+ years) in addition to one year aging under cork, which adds great complexity to this single site expression.

While the family has a long history in Champagne, it is Adrien who has taken this domaine to new heights. He has embraced tradition and natural winemaking techniques, but continues to strive for innovation. He was inspired by great Burgundy estates and his wines exhibit the texture and vinosity of those wines. He’s a meticulous winemaker who cares about each and every detail, and who is making some truly exciting Champagnes.
