The Land
From the steep granite terraces of Valtellina in northern Lombardy, ArPePe draws fruit shaped by altitude, stone, and sky. These terraced vineyards—some of the most dramatic and labor-intensive in Italy—face the southern sun while cooled by alpine breezes, allowing Nebbiolo (locally known as Chiavennasca) to ripen slowly and steadily. In 2021, a calm and steady growing season granted the fruit time to develop nuance without excess, preserving the lifted aromatics and brisk structure that define this high-altitude appellation.
The Wine
This Rosso di Valtellina is a study in elegance—fine-boned, precise, and quietly expressive. Pale in hue yet vibrant in exprrssion, it opens with notes of sour cherry, wild strawberry, dried rose, and crushed stone. There’s a gentle thread of mountain herbs and a whisper of earth, carried on a frame of silken tannins and linear acidity. The wine doesn’t ask to be noticed—it draws you in slowly, unfolding with each sip like a well-told story etched into stone and time. This wine has been a favorite of ours for many years and is the most accessible from the winery.
The People
At ArPePe, the Perego family tends their vines as stewards of tradition and place. With roots in Valtellina dating back to the 19th century, their approach is marked by patience and reverence: long fermentations, gentle extractions, and aging in large, neutral casks. Isabella, Emanuele, and Guido Perego carry forward their father Arturo’s vision—not as a legacy project, but as a living philosophy. In the Rosso, they offer an introduction to their world: approachable, transparent, and utterly sincere.
