The Land
Perched along the Ligurian coast, Bisson’s vineyards are shaped by the interplay of sea and stone. The Mediterranean breeze moderates the warmth of the Italian Riviera, while mineral-rich soils lend precision and salinity to the wines. Here, Ciliegiolo—a variety often overshadowed by its Sangiovese lineage—finds a voice of its own, producing rosé with both energy and depth.
The Wine
A vibrant, dry maritime rosato, the 2023 Bisson Ciliegiolo Rosato is alive with brightness and coastal charm. Its deep, red-pink hue hinges on being a red wine, yet the wine surprises with its refreshing and vibrant flavors not commonly encountered. Aromas of wild raspberries, pomegranate, and crushed rose petals rise from the glass, underscored by a distinct ocean breeze note. The palate is crisp and racy, with red berry fruit giving way to blood orange zest and a whisper of Mediterranean herbs. A mineral backbone and refreshing acidity make it as compelling on its own as it is alongside Ligurian seafood, fresh focaccia, or a simple plate of prosciutto and melon.
The People
Piero Lugano, the visionary behind Bisson, is both a winemaker and an artist of the land. A former antique dealer with an unwavering passion for Ligurian terroir, he champions native varieties and time-honored techniques. His approach to Ciliegiolo is one of purity—low intervention in the cellar allows the varietal and its coastal origins to shine. This rosato is more than a summer refreshment; it is an expression of place, history, and the quiet brilliance of a grape that deserves the spotlight.
