The Land
The "Gries" Lagrein Riserva comes from the Gries vineyard, located in the Bolzano suburb of Gries in Alto Adige. This site, with alluvial soils, is ideally suited to the indigenous red Lagrein grape, which has historical mentions dating back to 1379 in the region. The vineyards are situated on gentle slopes (0-5%) with a south to southwest orientation at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level. This location, combined with the specific soil composition, imparts a unique character to the Lagrein wines from Gries.
The Wine
This 2021 Lagrein "Gries" Riserva is a 100% varietal wine crafted through manual harvest and careful selection. The grapes are destemmed and undergo slow must fermentation in stainless steel with gentle agitation. Malolactic fermentation is followed by 12 months of aging, split between large wooden barrels (50%) and barriques (50%, with one-third new oak). Expect a deep ruby to garnet red color with a delicate violet shimmer. The aroma reveals earthy, mineral notes underpinned by fruit components, dominated by morello cherry, dark chocolate, and plum jam. The palate mirrors the nose, with spicy and velvety fruit notes and a multilayered opulence and complexity. This Lagrein Riserva showcases a juicy, balanced body with noble spicy notes and a long, intriguing finish.
The People
Cantina Terlano, founded in 1893, stands as one of Alto Adige's leading growers' cooperatives, now uniting 143 dedicated growers. This cooperative, while substantial in size, maintains a strong focus on quality, earning both Italian and international recognition. Their modern winery, expanded and refurbished in 2009, provides 18,000 cubic meters of storage space, ensuring optimal and undisturbed wine development. Cantina Terlano markets its wines in two distinct lines, "Selections" and "Traditional," and annually releases a rare wine after at least a decade of cellaring, showcasing their deep commitment to longevity. The cooperative is led by Chairman Georg Eyrl and Deputy Chairman Hansjörg Hafner, alongside a board of members, all dedicated to upholding Terlano's reputation for excellence.
