The Land
The "Praja" Monica di Sardegna comes from the Cardedu estate, located on the sparsely populated southeast coast of Sardinia. The vineyards are planted on crumbling granite soils near the coast. This unique terroir, combined with traditional, no-chemical farming methods, allows the local Monica grape to express its true character.
The Wine
This 2022 Monica is fermented with native yeasts in large cement tanks. The resulting wine is a zingy, light-bodied red with a spicy, underbrush quality and herbal notes, as well as a touch of fruit. The wine is designed to be highly drinkable, while also displaying the unique characteristics of this Sardinian grape and its terroir. The wine is best served slightly chilled and is intended to be versatile enough for a range of foods.
The People
Sergio Loi is a fourth-generation traditional Sardinian producer who has continued his family's tradition of no-chemical farming and minimal intervention in the cellar, a philosophy rooted in the wines they have been making since the early 1900s. Cardedu balances on that edge of being both thoughtful and traditional, and is an estate focused on producing wines that are both highly drinkable and that have enough character to stand up to all the flavors that the region has to offer.
