The Land
Clos des Fous "Cauquenina" originates from the Cauquenina sub-region within the Itata Valley in Chile, a region renowned for its ancient vineyards and unique terroir. Situated at an altitude of 490 feet, these vineyards, planted between 1985 and 2000, thrive on granitic soils. The region's dramatic coastal influence and challenging growing conditions contribute to grapes with intense flavors and a distinctive minerality. Clos des Fous, founded in 2008 by a group of friends dedicated to showcasing the true potential of Chilean wine, farms these vineyards with meticulous care, employing organic practices and minimizing intervention to preserve the integrity of the terroir.
The Wine
This "Cauquenina" 2018 is a captivating blend of Carignan (40%), País (40%), and Cinsault (20%), offering a unique glimpse into the soul of the Itata Valley. Sourced from multiple vineyards, the grapes underwent a four-day cold soak before fermentation with native yeasts in concrete vats and stainless steel tanks. The wine displays a deep ruby color and an alluring nose dominated by earthy aromas of leather, cassis, blueberries, interwoven with notes of blackberry, crushed walnuts, and a hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with firm yet refined tannins and a vibrant acidity. Flavors of fig and blueberry syrup are complemented by touches of powdered sugar and subtle spice. The finish is remarkably long and complex, leaving a lasting impression of fruit and a lingering minerality.
The People
Clos des Fous, founded in 2008 by Pedro Parra, François Massoc, Paco Leyton, and Albert Cussen, emerged from a shared frustration with the prevailing image of Chilean wine. Seeking to showcase the true potential of Chilean terroir, they embarked on a journey to discover the "Dark Side of the Moon" – the unique and often overlooked terroirs of Chile. Pedro Parra, a renowned terroir specialist with a Ph.D. in precision agriculture, brings his expertise to the project, consulting on vineyards globally. Clos des Fous, known for their innovative approach and commitment to minimal intervention, produces a range of captivating wines that reflect the unique character of their chosen terroirs.
