The Land

The De Martino Carmenere Estate 2022 originates from the Maipo Island, in the Maipo Valley of Chile, a region with a Mediterranean climate moderated by the Pacific Ocean. The vineyards are located on an alluvial terrace with a significant presence of gravel. The estate has been producing wines from this area since 1934, with four generations of the family working the vineyards and making the wines. They utilize sustainable agriculture, aiming for wines that are a true reflection of their vineyard sites.

The Wine

This 100% Carmenere offers a complex and layered expression of this unique grape, showing the potential of the variety from this region. It has a spicy aromatic profile and a good structure. Expect a range of dark fruit, with earthy, herbal, and spicy notes. The wine is aged in used barrels, further highlighting the purity of the fruit and a freshness and elegance that is their house style. It is a wine with intensity, but a clear focus on refinement.

The People

De Martino is a family winery with a history spanning over 80 years, with four generations now actively participating in the winemaking process. Pietro De Martino originally came from Italy in 1934, seeking an ideal location to produce the wines he had dreamed of. The family were pioneers in labeling and exporting the first Carmenere from Chile in 1996. They also worked with centenarian vineyards in the Itata Valley, implementing ancient winemaking techniques. De Martino is committed to producing wines that express their sense of place, with a dedication to purity and balance, alongside a respect for tradition and a commitment to innovation.

The Colchagua Valley, nestled in central Chile three hours south of Santiago, is renowned for its prowess in producing premium red wines, particularly from the Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah varieties. This wine region benefits from a warm climate moderated by cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean, creating ideal conditions for ripening grapes to perfection. The valley's fertile soils, ranging from loamy to granitic, contribute to the robust, fruit-forward character of its wines. With its scenic vineyards set against the backdrop of the Andes, Colchagua Valley is celebrated for its full-bodied reds that showcase deep flavors, smooth tannins, and a harmonious balance, earning it acclaim on the global wine stage.

Colchagua

Originally from Bordeaux, Carménère now thrives as Chile's signature grape, distinguished by its late ripening in Chile’s warm climates. This grape produces deep red wines noted for their earthy, herbaceous qualities, with flavors of green pepper, berries, and a hint of spice. Medium-bodied with moderate tannins, Carménère offers a smooth texture and distinct notes of paprika. Its success in various Chilean soils has led to diverse styles, from fruit-forward to structured, oak-aged versions, making it a standout in the wine world.
