The Land
Nestled in the cooler reaches of Chassey-le-Camp, Domaine de Cassiopée’s “En Gerlieus” plot lies on a northeast-facing hillside toward Beaune. Shadowed by surrounding hills and interspersed with wild forest, the area enjoys a later ripening season compared to central Côte de Beaune, giving this Bourgogne Rouge a refreshing lift. Vines here are 50 to 70 years old, naturally low-yielding due to their age and condition, and rooted in limestone-rich soils typical of the southern Côte de Beaune.

The Wine
For their first release of “En Gerlieus” in 2023, Hugo and Talloulah included around 40% whole clusters. Compared to their other red cuvées, this one saw a slightly extended aging period, partly in classic Burgundy barrels (228–450 liters) and a touch of experimentation with terracotta vessels. The result is a concentrated, textural Pinot Noir that manages to stay fresh and energetic. Expect aromas of bright red cherry and berries, subtle spice, supported by a gentle, fresh structure that makes for enjoyable early drinking, yet promises complexity with time in the cellar.

The People
Domaine de Cassiopée is the brainchild of two Burgundian newcomers, but not novices: both Hugo Mathurin and Talloulah Dubourg honed their skills under luminaries like Jean-Marc Roulot and Benjamin Leroux. Drawn to Maranges for its cooler climate and potential to craft bright, elegant wines, they settled in Sampigny-lès-Maranges in 2020. Today they farm just over five hectares under organic conversion, applying select biodynamic practices and minimal intervention in the cellar. It’s a forward-thinking approach aimed at revealing Maranges’ untapped nuances—one plot, one cuvée at a time.

Burgundy, in eastern France, encompasses several subregions, but it is the Côte d'Or that is home to many of the world's most expensive and revered wines. The region, primarily a single east-facing slope, has mixed limestone soils that vary dramatically from village to village and even vineyard to vineyard. White wines, crafted from Chardonnay, range from rich and opulent to lean and intensely mineral, while Pinot Noir produces silky, perfumed red wines of exceptional finesse and complexity. Centuries of winemaking tradition have resulted in every plot being meticulously recognized and scrutinized, making the Côte d'Or a true capital of terroir.

Burgundy - Cote d'Or

Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned, notoriously difficult-to-grow, low-yielding grape that finds its ancestral home in Burgundy, France, where it produces some of the world's most elegant and nuanced wines. While Burgundy remains its spiritual heartland, Pinot Noir has since traveled the globe, finding success in other cooler climates, notably in California, Oregon, New Zealand, and Germany. This grape is a challenge for any grower, as it requires specific conditions to show its best, and yet the wines it produces are capable of such a captivating and singular character.
