The Land
Barbaresco’s Roncaglie vineyard sits on gently rolling hills in the Langhe region of Piemonte, a place revered for its layered marls and sandstone soils. These soils—formed millions of years ago by an uplifted ancient seabed—allow Nebbiolo vines to root deeply, drawing on the area’s marine sediment to create wines of notable complexity. Cool breezes run along the hillsides, moderating the warm summers and preserving the vibrant acidity that is a hallmark of classic Barbaresco.

The Wine
Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, the 2021 Roncaglie highlights David Fletcher’s “infusion-style” fermentation: a slow, gentle approach, with minimal punchdowns and no forced extraction. The wine then rests in 300-liter barrels for just over two years, gaining polish and subtlety. Expect delicate red fruit aromas, floral nuances, and a taut structure balanced by lively acidity. The lighter color and refined tannin reflect Fletcher’s belief that Nebbiolo shines best when left to express its natural elegance.

The People
David Fletcher, an Australian winemaker immersed in the heart of Barbaresco, brings both respect for tradition and an open-minded perspective shaped by his global journey. Splitting his time as head of red wine production at Ceretto and running his own project from an old, refurbished railway station, Fletcher has woven himself into the local fabric. Through organic farming, thoughtful cellar work, and a deep reverence for Nebbiolo’s delicate nature, he produces wines that seamlessly blend new-world curiosity with the timeless soul of the Langhe.

Piedmont, framed by the Alps in northwestern Italy, is a land of rolling hills and carefully cultivated vineyards. The continental climate, with its cold winters and warm summers, creates prime conditions for the Nebbiolo grape, which dominates much of the region's red wine production. The Langhe area is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, structured red wines known for their complex aromas, firm tannins, and aging potential. While Nebbiolo is the dominant grape of Piedmont, the region also makes interesting white wines like those from Arneis and Timorasso. Alto Piemonte is a separate region in the north with its own distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo, alongside other red grape varietals.

Italy - Piedmont

Nebbiolo, a prestigious grape from Italy's Piedmont region, is celebrated for its profound truffle and rose aromas, complex flavors, and ability to age gracefully thanks to strong acidity and tannins, producing the renowned Barolo and Barbaresco wines.
