The Land

Sourced from the rolling hills around Asti in Piedmont, the Grignolino vineyards of Francesco Rinaldi e Figli sit on calcareous clay soils that offer both structure and delicacy. This corner of Monferrato is known for its soft slopes, continental climate, and dramatic diurnal swings—cool nights that help preserve the grape’s signature freshness and aromatic lift. Grignolino, a native variety once prized by the Savoy royal court, thrives here in the thin-skinned tension between sun and shadow, producing light-hued wines with surprising depth and nervy elegance.

The Wine

This Grignolino d’Asti is a vibrant, quietly rebellious expression of Piedmont—pale garnet in the glass, perfumed with notes of sour cherry, dried rose, and a dusting of white pepper. On the palate, it’s featherweight yet firm, with crisp acidity and a gentle bite of tannin that lingers delicately. Fermented in stainless steel and aged briefly to preserve purity, the wine carries a raw finesse that feels both old-world and refreshingly current. Subtle hints of strawberry skin, bitter almond, and dried herbs emerge with air. It’s a red that drinks like a conversation: light, layered, and alive.

The People

Francesco Rinaldi e Figli is a historic Barolo house, founded in 1870 and still family-owned today. Though best known for their Nebbiolo wines, the Rinaldi family continues to craft Grignolino in the spirit of tradition—an ode to everyday elegance and regional identity. Their approach is classic, restrained, and focused on expressing varietal truth without manipulation. Grignolino may not wear the crown of Barolo, but in the hands of a house like Rinaldi, it wears its lineage with quiet confidence—a wine rooted in place, made with reverence and restraint.

Home to some of the world's most highly regarded wines, including Barolo and Barbaresco, Piedmont is a treasure trove of wine country delights. This hilly region is planted with a host of local grape varieties, but it's the noble Nebbiolo grape that takes center stage.
