The Land

The hill of Brézé is the finest terroir for Chenin Blanc in Saumur, and Guiberteau's estate holds more than 10 of its 19.4 hectares there. The Saumur Blanc draws from clay and limestone parcels lower on the hill in Brézé alongside younger vines from the Clos des Carmes and Clos Guichaux sites. Chalky tuffeau limestone bedrock underlies the entire hillside, and the combination of that porous, mineral-rich substrate and the cooler conditions of the southern Saumur communes gives Chenin Blanc a tense, floral character quite different from what the grape produces in Vouvray or Anjou. This is the entry point into the Guiberteau range — the village wine before the single-vineyard bottlings.

The Wine

100% Chenin Blanc, hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts. Aged on fine lees in stainless steel through the spring, then lightly filtered before bottling. Where the Brézé and Clos des Carmes get barrel time, the Saumur Blanc stays in steel — the intention is freshness and precision over weight and texture. The 2024 Loire vintage brought mildew pressure through a wet growing season, but Saumur was better positioned than most areas. The resulting wines show freshness and aromatic lift. Lemon zest, white flowers, green apple, and chalk minerality, with a taut, saline finish. Drink it young and slightly cool.

The People

Romain Guiberteau's family has been growing grapes in the southern Saumur communes for more than a century. He took over the estate in the early 2000s and converted the vineyards to organic farming, earning AB certification by 2007. The estate is best known for its Brézé whites, but this village Saumur Blanc makes the house style accessible — the same tuffeau minerality, the same precision, at a lower price and earlier in its drinking window.

Food Pairing

Grilled sea bass with lemon and capers, oysters on the half shell, fresh goat cheese with herbs and olive oil, or a chicken salad with tarragon and shallots. The kind of white that disappears faster than expected.
