The Land
Saumur Rouge gets far less attention than its white counterpart, but Cabernet Franc planted on tuffeau limestone soils produces something worth paying close attention to: lighter in body than the Chinon or Bourgueil to the north, with a floral, iron-tinged precision that is uniquely Saumur. Guiberteau's Cabernet Franc comes from three parcels spanning roughly 2 hectares, the oldest of them planted in the mid-1950s on sandy silt over limestone bedrock. The parcels are spread across Brézé, Montreuil-Bellay, and Bizay — three southern Saumur communes where old vines on limestone produce structured, mineral red wine.
The Wine
100% Cabernet Franc from vines ranging up to 70 years in age. Fully destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged six months in stainless steel tanks. No oak. The approach prioritizes purity and freshness over extraction and weight. The 2023 Loire vintage was complicated — significant mildew pressure through a cool, wet growing season, followed by a warm late-season spell that concentrated the surviving fruit. Yields were low and selection was strict. The 2023 Saumur Rouge shows fresh cassis, blueberry, violets, iron, and crushed stone, with fine tannins and a nervy mineral finish. Serve slightly cool.
The People
Romain Guiberteau's family has cultivated vineyards in southern Saumur for more than a century, his great-grandfather having purchased the first vineyard sites before World War I. Romain took over in the early 2000s, converting to organic farming and earning AB certification by 2007. The estate is best known for its Chenin Blanc, but the Cabernet Franc has its own following — a red that earns its place on the table without trying to be anything it's not.
Food Pairing
Grilled duck breast with cherry and black pepper jus, charcuterie with cornichons and mustard, roast pork with herbs and garlic, or a mushroom risotto with thyme. A red that works equally well at the start of a meal or with the main course.

Cabernet Franc is a black-skinned grape variety primarily known for its contribution to the complex, savory bouquets of Bordeaux blends, and it thrives as a varietal wine in the Loire Valley, France. It often presents a lighter body with floral and herbaceous notes, complemented by a distinctively crisp acidity and a texture that speaks to its Loire Valley terroir, where the moderate climate and diverse soils amplify its elegance and aromatic complexity.
